Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, not many people know that as a teenager Malcolm Bund was a competitive swimmer (and he was pretty good at it, too!) You also may not realize that he’s been (and remains) a low handicap golfer, first learning golf at age13.
Currently in his fifth year as a Chairmen’s RoundTable mentor, Bund is now a retired industrialist with diverse experience in areas such as management consulting, corporate finance, M&A, and marketing. As a member of our Board of Directors, he serves as our Chief Financial Officer.
Beyond that, Malcolm is a big believer in civic involvement, supporting organizations that benefit inner city youth and the formerly incarcerated. He feels his calling includes supporting those who are less fortunate but are prepared to help themselves.
He also sits on the board of Kitchens for Good, transforming lives through culinary training. Ever-indefatigable, Malcolm is simultaneously working with several other CRT mentors to bring Vehicles For Change to San Diego. Their goal is to train the formerly incarcerated to become automotive technicians with an eye towards them finding well-paying jobs.
Bottom line: Malcolm can be counted on to invest his time, wisdom, and personal resources for the things that matter most to our community.
He’s the winner of the 2021 Crandall Challenge Citation from Wharton’s Graduate School, recognizing alumni who draw upon their knowledge, talents, and experience to make significant contributions towards improving the community and national socio-economic quality of life through continuous and significant volunteer endeavors. He’s also received the Joseph Wharton Award, given to exceptional Wharton alumni who have made resounding and lasting contributions to the business world and to their communities.
Our CFO has a ready wit and is always prepared to share a smile or turn a pleasant phrase with anyone within earshot. He appreciates the friendship, challenges, and intellectual stimulation he gets from fellow mentors and the clients he helps serve.
We caught Malcolm during a moment of reflection, when he recalled joining Chairmen’s RoundTable “…feeling I could share my knowledge with emerging companies needing help. I quickly found myself part of a wonderful group of well-connected and accomplished mentors all looking to give something back to San Diego’s business community.”
At heart, Malcolm has always seen himself as a consultant and a nurturing individual. As Chairman at Bund Capital, he was a pioneer in the world of private equity, raising his first pool of capital in the mid-eighties. His diverse career spanned multiple industries, and included management of professional athletes and celebrities, as well as owning/operating manufacturing and distribution companies making and distributing both automotive parts and building materials.
